  • Nowhere in any terms of service did I vow to ‘grow the fediverse’. I do not want it to grow for growths sake. I have no obligation to spend my time online with anyone and I choose to spend it here. When this turns to shit, I will find another community that attracts the people I choose to associate with. Life is too damn short.

I never suggested anyone stop using lemmy. You projected that. I suggested they use the existing features to create the experience they desire and leave me out of it.

This is a bad suggestion for a feature that can only be misused. The meaning of ‘politics’ as a content tag is completely subjective and can only be abused.

So get off your high horse and don’t put words in my mouth. Make your own.

  • Framework laptops are not great actually. They basically are offloading their qa/qc onto customers. They routinely ship defective units new out of the box and try to make you do all their engineering work for them.

The quality of the components is meh at best. If I were doing it again, I would go the ThinkPad route.

Framework is a bunch of VC funded shills who see the right to repair movement as a resource they can exploit.

  • Then stop doomscrolling! The software is already baked into your noodle. Play with your cat instead or whatever.

I am sorry if you cannot process the current reality unfiltered but you have already identified the mechanisms to use to protect yourself.

The reason it is a dumb and abusable feature is that the word ‘politics’ is MEANINGLESS in this context.

Don’t like gay people? POLITICS! Do you like gay people? POLITICS!

A ‘politics’ tag is a tool for automating bulk censorship that YOU can and should be doing for yourself, manually. The entire point of the fediverse is that it bypasses that centralized mindset.

You decide what sort of politics give you heartburn and adjust your consumption accordingly. Outsourcing that decision making to others is morally lazy.

  • I’m going to pile on too.

    No. Bad idea.

Crying ‘pOLiTics’ is the weak persons way of trying to steer the conversation away from topics they don’t want to talk about.

In the fediverse, if you don’t like a topic, one already has the feature they need. That is the ability to keep scrolling to find a topic one is seeking.

Quit whining about politics and avoid those groups at the party. Or do the personal work and figure out how to be a useful part of the conversation.

Don’t build your big tech bullshit into our fediverse. Curate your own communities and user blocklists.

  • Back when Perl was the language of choice for bioinformatics, I found a huge performance boost pre-processing large (~1Tb) text files using built in unix tools like sed and awk with regex. So while it might take me a full hour to peck out the correct incantation, the task would then run in an hour, compared to four hours or more for the same task using Perl.

    So many pipes…

  • This is sad news. He was deeply influential and at the same time a somewhat obscure author. At least, in my experience, he didn’t have the name recognition other - dare I say lesser - authors had.

One lesson I learned as a young person from reading A Fire Upon the Deep was to never believe anything just because it was on the internet. That alone makes his legacy worth remembering.
